Today is my 36th birthday. Since 2004 I've marked this day by adding a line to this list, indicating the one book I read during the previous year that was the most important to my life -- often a book that either informed my personal development during that year, or that symbolized some transition.

This year's book is Down to Earth: A Gardener's Guide to the Albuquerque Area, by the Master Gardeners program of the Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service:

30 days of biking

Today was the first day of 30 days of biking, an annual challenge to ride your bike every day in April. It's been going on since 2010 at least, but I just learned about it a few weeks ago so this is my first time participating. Before we moved west, I rode my bike nearly every day, but since the move I've only been on a few rides, which is particularly tragic given that we are just a few hundred meters from amazing bike trails. So it felt really great to hop on the bike today, even if it was just to head down the street to a brewery.

Reflecting on my 2014 resolutions and setting new intentions for 2015

At the start of 2014, I posted about the goals, habits, and resolutions I wanted to pursue during the year. I kept it pretty simple: I resolved to achieve "Inbox Zero" at least once every week at work, and I resolved to start each month by setting realistic self-improvement goals and blogging about those goals.

How I boosted the performance of my cranky old MacBook Pro

For the past year or so, my mid-2009 model MacBook Pro has been performing worse and worse and worse, to the point that when I'm taking notes during a conference call I often have to pause the conversation to say "hold on, my text editor stalled." It's embarrassing, and has really cut into my productivity.
